Radioastronomy of Pulsarsvon Project CLEA
The software for this exercise presents students with a radio telescope whose default operating characteristics (beam width, receiver noise, steerability) can be set by the instructor. Students can point the telescope at a source in the sky, viewing the output of the radio receiver on a graphic display that resembles a digital oscilloscope. The receiver can be tuned to a range of frequencies between 400 and 1400 Mhz, and additional independently tunable receivers (up to 3 total) can be displayed on the screen. Gain and sweep time of the display can be adjusted to optimize the appearance of the signal. Data from each receiver can be saved for later analysis on a versatile measuring screen. PC's with sound cards can also "listen" to an audio version of the signal (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
Eclipsing Binary Starsvon Project CLEA
To understand the observation problems involved in identifying eclipsing binary stars. To understand how to determine the period of a variable star from irregularly sampled measurements of its brightness. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
The Height of Lunar Mountainsvon Project CLEA
To become familiar with the measurement of positions on digital images. To understand how the height of surface features on the moon is determined from measurements of the length of their shadows. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
Dying Stars and the Birth of the Elementsvon Project CLEA
To introduce students to the topic of nucleosynthesis through the technique of x-ray spectroscopy of a supernova remnant. Produced in collaboration with the XMM-Newton office of Education and Public Outreach, this exercise uses spectra taken with the XMM-Newton satellite of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
Transits of Venus and Mercury Using Images from the GONG projectvon Project CLEA
A bit of history and a bit of science! To introduce students to the rare phenomenon of planetary transits (of Venus and Mercury) and to demonstrate the concept of parallax. Using modern methods---digital images from sites at various locations on the earth---it is possible to measure the length of the Astronomical Unit with a precision barely attainable by much more complex means during the previous transits of Venus in the 19th century. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
The Quest for Object Xvon Project CLEA
To allow students to exercise some of the measurement techniques they have learned in earlier exercises to identify unknown objects given their celestial coordinates. To simulate the open-ended discovery and analysis techniques of research astronomers. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
The Period of Rotation of the Sun Using Images of Sunspots from the GONG projectvon Project CLEA
To introduce students to the techniques that astronomers use to measure the rotation rate of the sun using images of sunspots. To introduce some of the difficulties of using two-dimensional images to derive three-dimensional properties of celestial objects. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
The Flow of Energy Out of the Sunvon Project CLEA
To illustrate the statistical nature of radiative transfer in stellar interiors and stellar atmospheres. To show how photons diffuse in a random- walk pattern from the core of a star. To show how spectral lines are formed by random processes of absorption and re-emission in its atmosphere. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
The Large Scale Structure of the Universevon Project CLEA
To understand how astronomers use the redshift-distance relation to map out the cosmic structure of the galaxies. To discover how the galaxies in the vicinity of the Milky Way are distributed in space. To understand how astronomers work together to collect data on many objects. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
The Hubble RedShift-Distance Relationvon Project CLEA
To illustrate how the velocities of galaxies are measured using a photon-counting spectrograph. To show how this information, along with estimates of galaxy distances (from their integrated apparent magnitudes) yields the classic Hubble redshift- distance relation. To determine the value of the Hubble parameter and the expansion age of the universe (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
Spectral Classification of Starsvon Project CLEA
To introduce students to digital spectra and to the process of classifying different spectra by the relative strengths of lines. To familiarize students with the sequence of spectral types. To teach how spectra are obtained. To show how the distance of a star can be estimated from its spectrum and a measurement of its apparent magnitude (spectroscopic parallax). To illustrate the need for large-aperture telescopes for the observation of faint objects. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
Photoelectric Photometry of the Pleiadesvon Project CLEA
To familiarize students with the technique of photoelectric filter photometry and counting statistics. To acquaint students with the use of a computer controlled telescope. To illustrate the use of equatorial coordinates for finding stars in a cluster. To introduce the use of H-R diagrams for analyzing the age and distance of clusters. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
The Rotation of Mercury by Doppler Effectvon Project CLEA
To illustrate the measurement of the rotation rate of a planet using the Doppler shift of a returning radar pulse. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
H-R Diagrams of Star Clustervon Project CLEA
To illustrate how HR diagrams of star clusters are used to determine the distances and ages of the clusters. If desired, students can also measure the magnitudes and colors of the cluster stars using a simulated telescope, thus learning how astronomers collect the data used to produce an HR diagram. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
The Revolution of the Moons of Jupitervon Project CLEA
To illustrate the measurement of the mass of a planet using Kepler's third law. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware
Astrometry of Asteroidsvon Project CLEA
To introduce students to the techniques that astronomers use to discover asteroids and to measure their coordinates in the sky. To show students what is meant by parallax and how parallax is measured. (Webseite ,Download ,Anleitung ) - Freeware |
